Strukton Afzinktechnieken signed a contract in Busan, South Korea this week. The contract entails the placement of the first immersion tunnel in the country. ‘The project is part of the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link and provides a solution for the mobility problem in densely populated South Korea,’ according to Martijn Smitt, director of Strukton Betonbouw.
The Geoje Fixed Link, with two cable bridges with respective spans of 475 and 2 x 230 metres and a 3.2-kilometre immersion tunnel, connects the second capital of South Korea with the Geojemet peninsula.
The total project has an investment value of EUR 1.5 billion. The contract for the placement operation is worth 70 million euros and will be performed on behalf of Daewoo Engineering & Construction, which is part of the PPP Consortium for the project, GK Fixed Link Corporation.

During the coming three years, the Strukton Afzinktechnieken team will place a total of 18 tunnel elements, each 180 metres long. The deepest elements will be about 60 metres below sea level. ‘This is exceptionally deep for an immersion tunnel’, says Ton Bruins Slot, Senior Project Manager at Strukton Afzinktechnieken. ‘That’s why we use special, innovative techniques.’ Bruins Slot: ‘Our transparent approach, specialist knowledge, matter-of-factness and lots of patience ultimately convinced the client of our plan.’ ‘We like the Dutch approach” relates Mr. Yang, General Manager of Daewoo E&C.

Besides the current projects, including the immersion tunnels on the North/South line, the Limerick immersion tunnel in Ireland and recently the immersion tunnel on the A73 motorway at Roermond, the project fits in well with the positioning of Strukton Afzinktechnieken, which operates under the name Mergor. Strukton Afzinktechnieken and Mergor are part of Strukton Betonbouw bv. The project further substantiates Strukton Betonbouw’s ambitions to extend and broaden its chain.
