Amfora Amstel wins prestigious award

12 | 04 | 2010

The Amfora Amstel pilot project has won the Big Urban Projects Award established by the world’s first and biggest property market MIPIM in cooperation with the monthly international trade magazine Architectural Review.

Underground urban expansion
Amfora Amstel was developed by Strukton and elaborated by Zwarts & Jansma Architecten, in close cooperation with Royal Theatre Carré and Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam. The feasible and affordable plan is a concrete elaboration of Strukton’s topical Amfora concept for underground urban expansion with multifunctional facilities beneath Amsterdam’s canals.

Amfora Amstel will create space under the Amstel between the Amstel Hotel and Stopera building complex. The new space will put Amsterdam on the map as an innovative metropolis: compact, sustainable, literally and figuratively energising, focused on culture, creation and direct communication between people; with architectural gems reinforcing the city’s historical context.

Presentation on 8 April
The partners involved in Amfora Amstel will present the plan in its entirety at Royal Theatre Carré on 8 April 2010 to a large group of interested parties, business relations, national media and trade press representatives. During the event, Harmke Pijpers will lead a panel discussion on the future of the city under the banner and from the premise of ‘Love for Amsterdam’. The guests will all be able to contribute towards the debate and express their love for the city.
